Delta Postpones Inaugural Atlanta-Riyadh Flight to March 2027
Delta Air Lines has decided to delay the launch of its much-anticipated nonstop route from Atlanta (ATL) to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (RUH). This decision comes in the wake of fatal attacks on the main airport in the Saudi capital, which raised significant safety concerns. The announcement of the delay was made on October 12, 2026, less than two weeks before the service was originally scheduled to start on October 23. The inaugural flight has now been pushed back to March 2027.
This route was poised to be a historic landmark, marking Delta’s first-ever direct passenger service to Saudi Arabia. It was also set to be the first nonstop flight between the United States and Riyadh operated by any U.S. airline. The service was planned to be operated on Delta’s wide-body Airbus A350-900, offering four cabin classes — Delta One, Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort+, and Main Cabin — for the approximately 7,000-mile journey.
Delta continues to maintain communication with government and aviation partners, including Saudia and Riyadh Air, as it keeps a close watch on the situation. This route is a crucial part of Delta’s global expansion strategy and is a continuation of its exclusive partnership with Riyadh Air, which was signed in July 2024. The airline’s CEO, Ed Bastian, had previously described the Riyadh service as “a key step in Delta’s global growth as we start our second century of flight.”
