OpenAI Engineer Arrested by FBI for Allegedly Bugging Executive Conference Room

In a shocking violation of corporate security, the FBI has taken into custody a Saudi national working as an engineer at OpenAI. The arrest followed the discovery of a concealed audio recording device in an executive conference room at the company’s San Francisco headquarters.

Abdulrahman Alfozan, 35, became a part of OpenAI in July 2025. He was arrested on October 9, 2026, and faces charges of using or attempting to use a device to intercept oral communications, as per the U.S. Department of Justice. Alfozan made his appearance in federal court on October 13 and is currently in custody.

The hidden device was found by OpenAI personnel on September 30. This thumb-sized gadget, equipped with a microphone and camera connectivity, was cleverly hidden in toilet paper and connected to a USB port on the back of a television in the executive conference room. A similar device was later discovered in Alfozan’s personal bag. The data stored on both devices was encrypted. Interestingly, OpenAI’s own artificial intelligence models played a crucial role in helping investigators analyze the device and identify Alfozan as the suspect.

FBI Director Kash Patel expressed that Alfozan allegedly aimed to covertly record sensitive communications about the company’s superintelligence technology. This case highlights the increasing national security concerns surrounding the protection of advanced AI research. OpenAI has confirmed that Alfozan has been terminated and the case has been referred to the FBI, which is continuing its investigation.
