FBI Apprehends OpenAI Engineer for Secretly Bugging Executive Conference Room
In a startling instance of supposed corporate espionage, a Saudi national and OpenAI engineer was arrested by the FBI. The engineer, Abdulrahman Alfozan, is accused of secretly installing a recording device in an executive conference room at OpenAI’s San Francisco offices.
Alfozan, 35, has been a part of OpenAI since July 2025, contributing to the company’s Agents Platform team.
The U.S. Department of Justice reports that Alfozan allegedly concealed a thumb-sized audio recording device, equipped with advanced encryption and audio monitoring capabilities, in a USB port on the back of a television in the executive conference room. This incident reportedly occurred on or around September 28, 2026.
OpenAI’s internal security team discovered the device on September 30. Utilizing their own AI models, the company was able to analyze the sophisticated device and trace it back to Alfozan.
FBI Director Kash Patel shared that Alfozan “allegedly concealed a covert recording device inside his employer’s executive conference room to secretly capture sensitive communications about the company’s super intelligence technology.” Investigators also discovered a similar customized device in Alfozan’s personal belongings.
Alfozan was terminated from his position and arrested on October 9, 2026. If convicted, he could face a maximum sentence of five years in prison. OpenAI has confirmed that, as of now, there is no evidence suggesting that model weights, source code, or customer data were accessed or exfiltrated.
This case highlights the escalating global competition and increasing security risks associated with cutting-edge AI research.
