Ozempic & Mounjaro Associated with Nail Detachment: Findings from a Pioneering Study

A groundbreaking multinational study unveiled at the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (EADV) Congress 2026 in Vienna, Austria has brought to light a startling new side effect of widely-used GLP-1 weight-loss drugs such as Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound — nail detachment and discoloration.

The research team compared 575 GLP-1 drug users with 1,329 non-users suffering from obesity or type 2 diabetes across France, the United States, Brazil, and Mexico. The results were remarkable:

  • Nail detachment (onycholysis) was reported by 39% of GLP-1 users versus a mere 9% of controls — a rate more than four times higher.
  • Nail discoloration was experienced by 46% of GLP-1 users compared to only 17% of non-users.

A parallel study presented at the same congress discovered that GLP-1 users were also significantly more susceptible to hair loss and scalp inflammation.

Despite these findings, experts warn that the study, being the first controlled investigation of its kind, cannot conclusively establish causality due to its cross-sectional nature and reliance on patient-reported data. Interestingly, when the researchers analyzed only the nail changes that occurred after the treatment commenced, some associations weakened. This suggests that pre-existing conditions may be responsible for a portion of the observed difference. Clinicians are now encouraged to actively inquire about any nail changes in patients on GLP-1 therapies and refer them for dermatological evaluation if necessary.
