Atlassian Empowers Jira and Confluence with OpenAI’s GPT-6
In a significant development for enterprise AI, Atlassian and OpenAI unveiled an extended partnership on October 6, 2026. This partnership integrates OpenAI’s formidable GPT-6 family of models, including GPT-6 Astra and the GPT-5.6 series, into Atlassian’s popular workplace tools such as Jira, Confluence, and Bitbucket.
This agreement strengthens a collaboration that initially started in 2023 and signifies a considerable step towards AI-driven enterprise workflows. Central to this integration is Rovo, Atlassian’s AI assistant for search, chat, and task orchestration. Rovo will now be powered by OpenAI’s cutting-edge models. It combines OpenAI’s reasoning capabilities with Atlassian’s proprietary Teamwork Graph—a permission-aware map of a company’s projects, decisions, and people—to deliver what both companies term as genuine “organizational reasoning.”
The partnership also brings ChatGPT and Codex connectivity into Jira and Confluence through a revamped Model Context Protocol (MCP) server with over 220 tools. This enables tasks such as auto-creating Jira issues, summarizing Confluence documents, and coordinating cross-team projects. Over 3,000 Atlassian developers are already leveraging Codex, and the integration caters to Atlassian’s base of more than 2.5 million businesses globally. The roadmap includes plans for autonomous Jira agents capable of independently managing work items.
