Introducing the Surface Laptop Ultra: Microsoft’s Most Powerful AI-Powered Device

Microsoft has officially unveiled its most powerful Surface device to date — the Surface Laptop Ultra — starting at $2,599. The announcement was made at a company event in San Francisco on Wednesday, October 7. This premium machine is built around Nvidia’s RTX Spark Superchip, combining an Arm-based Grace CPU with up to 20 cores and a Blackwell RTX GPU featuring up to 6,144 cores.

The laptop is designed to run demanding AI workloads directly on-device — without routing every task to the cloud and incurring steep monthly bills. It supports configurations of up to 128GB of unified memory and can deliver up to 1 petaflop of AI computing power, enabling it to run models with more than 120 billion parameters. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang noted that the Blackwell RTX Spark GPU matches the processing power of Nvidia’s historic DGX-1 data center server.

The 15-inch device also boasts the world’s first magnetic breakaway USB-C port, similar to Apple’s MagSafe connector, along with two additional standard USB-C ports. Microsoft executive vice president Pavan Davuluri confirmed preorders are open now, with shipping beginning October 16, 2026. Analysts say the Surface Laptop Ultra is squarely aimed at competing with Apple’s MacBook Pro in the premium AI and creative workloads segment.
