AT&T iPhone 18 Pro Max Users Face Mandatory Device Replacement Due to Persistent Bug

Apple has officially acknowledged a severe hardware defect impacting a subset of iPhone 18 Pro Max users on the AT&T network. The only resolution for this issue is a full device replacement. The iPhone 18 Pro Max, priced at $1,299, is Apple’s premier smartphone, excluding the upcoming foldable iPhone Duo. The device was launched on September 18, 2026.

The defect results in the permanent loss of cellular service on affected devices, thereby disabling users from making calls, sending or receiving text messages, or using mobile data on the AT&T network. A multitude of users have reported an alarming “SOS” sign on their iPhone’s status bar, rendering their devices operational only with a Wi-Fi connection. Apple has clarified that the problem affects only “a small number” of users, although the exact number of affected handsets remains undisclosed.

In an effort to prevent further devices from being impacted, Apple has rolled out iOS 27.0.1 and a new AT&T carrier settings update (version 72.1). The company now mandates the installation of iOS 27.0.1 during the setup of new iPhone 18 Pro Max units. However, Apple has confirmed that these software updates cannot restore service on devices that have already been affected. Affected users are advised to contact Apple Support or AT&T, or visit an Apple Store or AT&T retail location to obtain a replacement handset. AT&T has released a statement assuring that it is “working with Apple” to rectify the situation for impacted customers.

The root cause of the issue remains undisclosed by Apple. It is known that the U.S. models of the iPhone 18 Pro Max utilize a Qualcomm Snapdragon X80 modem for cellular connectivity.
