Dyson’s AI-Powered Toothbrush, CameraJet, Recalled Over Water Leakage Issue

Dyson’s much-anticipated foray into the oral care market has encountered a major hiccup. The tech behemoth’s ground-breaking Dyson CameraJet—a $499 AI-powered electric toothbrush—was withdrawn from retail outlets in various countries just weeks after its launch on September 8. This was due to a manufacturing flaw that allowed water to infiltrate the device.

In a statement to Bloomberg, a Dyson representative confirmed, “one production batch of jet tubes experienced a process issue, creating a potential for water seepage which affected the performance of a small number of products.” Users expressed their dissatisfaction on social media, reporting leaking tanks, water in the battery compartment, and devices failing within the first 30 seconds of use.

The CameraJet is not your average toothbrush. It boasts a 100,000-pixel macro lens powered by machine learning that examines 28 live images per second to identify gaps between teeth in real time. This triggers a precision jet burst of mouth rinse. The device employs Dyson’s exclusive Gap Optical Targeting technology. Despite the issue, Dyson emphasized that this does not amount to a formal recall. The company isolated the affected inventory, provided full refunds to affected customers, and has now resumed full production and shipments to retail partners.

The problematic launch poses a significant challenge for Dyson as it seeks to establish oral care as its next premium product category, following the success of hair styling tools like the Airwrap.
