AMD Makes a Bold Move into AI with $8.2 Billion Acquisition of World Labs
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), a leading chipmaker, has made a significant stride into the realm of AI. On Monday, AMD announced a definitive agreement to acquire World Labs, a San Francisco-based AI research startup. The startup, co-founded by industry legend Dr. Fei-Fei Li, was acquired in an all-stock deal valued at approximately $8.2 billion.
This acquisition signifies AMD’s most direct foray into AI model research. It goes beyond hardware, acquiring a team that is building “world models”. These are AI systems designed to generate, reconstruct, and simulate interactive 3D environments using text, image, and video inputs. World Labs’ flagship product, Marble, is capable of creating rich 3D scenes from just a few images. Its applications range from robotics and autonomous vehicles to industrial simulation.
The deal is expected to close by the end of 2026, pending regulatory approval. Upon completion, Dr. Li will join AMD as Executive Vice President and Chief Scientist, reporting directly to CEO Dr. Lisa Su. Dr. Li, a celebrated Stanford computer science professor known for creating the ImageNet database that sparked the modern AI era, stated that the deal would provide World Labs with the engineering depth required to “accelerate our research and help define the infrastructure needed for the next era of AI.”
This transaction, AMD’s second-largest acquisition ever, is a strategic move to close the gap with rival Nvidia as the AI chip race intensifies.
