OpenAI Unveils ‘Astra for Law’: A Revolutionary Legal Research Tool With 230M-URL Index
OpenAI has made a significant stride into the legal sector, unveiling Astra for Law on September 17, 2026. This potent new AI system, built on its most sophisticated model, GPT-6 Astra, is specifically tailored for law firms and legal technology companies. Its standout feature is a proprietary Legal Search Index that encompasses over 230 million URLs of U.S. case law, statutes, regulations, court rules, and administrative decisions, with new sources being added daily.
The index extensively utilizes the Free Law Project’s CourtListener database, covering more than 99.9% of published U.S. precedential case law. This tool aims to assist lawyers in identifying relevant legal authorities, understanding their binding nature, and even flagging cases that could potentially undermine a legal argument — significantly speeding up legal research workflows.
Major law firms such as Latham & Watkins, Ropes & Gray, Cooley, and Sullivan & Cromwell are among the early adopters. Access is initially being rolled out through a Trusted Access Programme within ChatGPT and Codex. Legal tech companies Harvey and Legora have also been confirmed as API integration partners. Alongside this, OpenAI launched 26 partner-built plugins that cover legal practice and business operations. This development follows OpenAI’s September 10 launch of ChatGPT for Financial Services, indicating the company’s swift expansion into regulated professional sectors — one profession at a time.
