Cybersecurity professionals are raising concerns as artificial intelligence (AI) rapidly shifts the power dynamics in favor of malicious actors. Industry analysts warn that most enterprise security programs are ill-equipped to handle machine-speed attacks targeting foundational system weaknesses.

Security researchers at The Register report that AI has given attackers a potent new tool: the ability to identify architectural flaws in software and network infrastructure at a pace that far exceeds human capabilities. Concurrently, the surge in AI-assisted development tools is expanding the attack surface. This means more code is being produced at a faster rate, with an increased risk of potential vulnerabilities.

The current threat landscape necessitates a four-stage defensive response: Discover, Remediate, Validate, and Prevent. Security teams are striving to implement this framework before adversaries can exploit the widening gap. Traditional static vulnerability scoring methods, such as CVSS scores, are becoming obsolete. Agencies like NIST are transitioning towards risk-based prioritization to more accurately reflect the urgency of real-world threats.

Experts emphasize that legacy security architectures, including those safeguarding mainframes and older enterprise systems, are particularly vulnerable. These platforms increasingly serve as the backbone for new AI services, making them high-value targets that are inadequately protected in this era of autonomous cyberattacks.
