ByteDance: Preparing for a Massive AI Investment in 2026

ByteDance, the Beijing-based parent company of TikTok, is gearing up for an unprecedented AI investment spree. The company has preliminary plans to allocate approximately 160 billion yuan (~$23 billion) in capital expenditure for 2026, as reported by the Financial Times. This marks a significant increase from the 150 billion yuan invested in AI infrastructure in 2025.

More than half of this substantial investment will be funneled towards acquiring advanced semiconductors. These will be instrumental in powering the development of AI models and applications. ByteDance has earmarked approximately 85 billion yuan specifically for AI processors. This includes a trial order of around 20,000 Nvidia H200 chips worth an estimated $400 million. This is a bold move, considering the ongoing U.S. export restrictions on cutting-edge chips to China. The investment also bolsters Doubao, ByteDance’s rapidly growing AI assistant that has carved a significant niche in China’s competitive AI market.

Despite being one of China’s largest builders of AI infrastructure, ByteDance’s spending is still dwarfed by the combined outlay of U.S. tech giants. Companies such as Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, and Microsoft are collectively expected to invest hundreds of billions of dollars in AI infrastructure in 2026. ByteDance is also leasing overseas data centers to legally access Nvidia’s most advanced hardware for model training and serving international customers outside China.
