All Six Survive as Citation Excel Jet Overruns Runway in California
A dramatic general aviation incident unfolded on September 1, 2026, when a Cessna 560XL Citation Excel business jet (registration N562JL) overran the runway while landing at Porterville Municipal Airport (KPTV) in California’s San Joaquin Valley. Miraculously, everyone on board walked away unscathed.
The aircraft, originating from Oakland International Airport, took off at approximately 11:06 a.m. local time. On board were two pilots and four Bay Area physicians, chartered to travel to Porterville for a scheduled surgical procedure.
According to preliminary ADS-B data, the jet touched down on Runway 12 at an exceptionally high groundspeed of around 224 knots on final approach. It was still traveling at approximately 111 knots when it departed the runway end. The aircraft rolled through a field and came to rest near the intersection of Teapot Dome Avenue and Newcomb Street, some 1,100 feet beyond the runway.
Upon arrival, deputies from the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office found smoke emanating from the aircraft, but no fire. All six occupants had self-evacuated. The four doctors were taken to a local hospital as a precaution, but no serious injuries were reported. Porterville Fire Department crews secured the aircraft’s power systems, and temporary road closures were put in place while emergency personnel worked the scene.
The aircraft, a 2002-built Cessna 560XL registered to Monreve LLC of Jacksonville, Florida, sustained substantial damage. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is leading the investigation, with the FAA also involved. A preliminary NTSB report is expected within approximately 30 days.
