Unprecedented Surge in Billionaire Wealth Driven by AI Investment Boom
The global billionaire population has soared to new heights, primarily propelled by the relentless boom in artificial intelligence (AI) investments. This insight comes from the Billionaire Census 2026, a report by wealth intelligence firm Altrata. The collective wealth of the world’s billionaires surged by 12.8% to a record-breaking $15.1 trillion in 2025. This staggering figure highlights the profound impact the AI revolution is having on the redistribution of global wealth.
In 2025, the number of billionaires reached a record 3,795 individuals, marking an 8.2% increase in billionaire count. This is the most significant annual surge in the past five years. Among the most notable findings, Altrata identified 29 “superbillionaires” — individuals with a net worth exceeding $50 billion. Their combined net worth of $4.1 trillion accounts for 27% of the total global billionaire wealth.
The AI investment frenzy is a significant factor behind this wealth surge. Companies that invested a minimum of $30 million in AI over the past five years outperformed their non-AI-investing counterparts by 23% in market capitalization growth between 2024 and 2025. However, analysts caution about the escalating risks. They note that the total billionaire wealth now equals approximately a quarter of the total market capitalization of the S&P 500. This raises concerns about the extreme concentration of wealth in the tech and AI sectors.
North American billionaires reaped the most benefits from the AI surge. Meanwhile, the expanding wealth gap within the billionaire class itself indicates a new era of hyper-concentrated financial power at the pinnacle of the global economy.
