American consumers and businesses are grappling with a new economic challenge as diesel fuel prices skyrocketed to a record-breaking $5.85 per gallon on Friday, September 4, 2026. This data, provided by the American Automobile Association (AAA), shatters the previous high of $5.82 per gallon set in June 2022. It represents a staggering 55% increase since late February, just before the conflict with Iran intensified.

The ongoing six-month war with Iran has caused significant disruptions to global fuel supplies. Tanker traffic is heavily bottlenecked at the critical Strait of Hormuz, leading to higher crude oil prices, reduced refining capacity abroad, and tight global inventories. These factors have collectively pushed diesel prices into record territory. In comparison, regular gasoline prices have also risen, averaging $4.15 per gallon nationally, a significant increase from $2.98 before the conflict began.

The broader economy is already feeling the ripple effects of these changes. Diesel fuels the freight trucks, trains, and farm equipment that transport America’s goods.
