Global Oil Markets React to U.S. Military Action in Iran

Global oil markets experienced a significant shakeup on Monday, August 31. This was due to a sharp spike in crude prices following a fresh U.S. military strike on Iranian rocket launchers in the Strait of Hormuz. Brent crude for November surged above $90 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) climbed near $86 — a notable escalation in an already volatile energy landscape.

The U.S. military reportedly struck Iranian rocket launchers that were preparing to deploy mines into the critical waterway on Sunday. This action ended weeks of relative calm. The Strait of Hormuz is a crucial oil shipping chokepoint, with approximately one-fifth of global oil supplies passing through it.

The sudden price spike added to broader market anxiety. S&P 500 futures edged lower in early trading, and the dollar held near recent highs. This followed hawkish inflation comments from Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh. Analysts warn that any sustained disruption to Hormuz shipping lanes could send prices even higher. This would impact consumers and businesses worldwide who are already grappling with elevated energy costs.
