End of an Era: Amazon’s Mechanical Turk Bows Out After 21 Years, Succumbs to AI Evolution
In a significant development symbolizing the end of an era, Amazon has declared the permanent closure of its Mechanical Turk (MTurk), a pioneering crowdsourced labor platform, on September 30, 2026. This move brings down the curtains on one of the internet’s oldest and most impactful digital marketplaces after 21 years of service.
Since its inception in 2005, MTurk played a crucial role in connecting businesses and researchers with a global workforce of hundreds of thousands. These workers undertook small online jobs, or “Human Intelligence Tasks” (HITs), such as image labeling, audio transcription, and survey responses, typically for a nominal fee per task. Amazon’s founder, Jeff Bezos, famously dubbed the service as “artificial artificial intelligence”, attributing to its human-centric approach to tasks that computers were yet to master.
At its zenith, the platform catered to more than 500,000 workers. However, the recent years witnessed a steady decline in its popularity as advanced AI models began to automate many of the tasks previously handled by humans. This shift, coupled with the emergence of competitive data-labeling startups like Scale AI, Mercor, and Prolific, diverted both workers and businesses away from MTurk. Amazon had already ceased accepting new MTurk customers on July 30, 2026, a move widely interpreted as a precursor to an impending shutdown.
The closure of MTurk is steeped in irony. The very AI systems that MTurk helped train, through countless hours of human-labeled data, ultimately led to its obsolescence. Nonetheless, for the workers who relied on it for a flexible remote income, the loss is tangible.
