Spain is celebrating its most successful tourism year to date, with over 67 million international air passengers touching down between January and July 2026. This represents a 5.2% increase compared to the same period in the previous year, as reported by Travel Daily News. This surge builds upon the historic numbers of 2025, when Spain welcomed a record 96.8 million foreign tourists. Analysts are now forecasting that Spain could break the 100 million visitor milestone for the first time ever in 2026.
The month of June alone witnessed a record-breaking 9.75 million international arrivals. Visitor spending for this month soared to €13.58 billion. The geopolitical instability in the Middle East has led to millions of holidaymakers redirecting their plans to Spain. Summer flight bookings have seen a 32% year-on-year increase as travellers favour Spanish beaches and cities over eastern Mediterranean alternatives. The United Kingdom, France, and Germany continue to be the top source markets driving these arrivals.
Popular destinations such as Barcelona, Mallorca, the Costa del Sol, and the Canary Islands are all experiencing record footfall. However, tourism authorities are also facing the challenges of increasing overtourism pressures, rising housing costs, and calls for more sustainable visitor management. Spain’s National Statistics Institute (INE) continues to release monthly data confirming this upward trend.
