Nvidia Contemplates Over $30B Investment in Perplexity AI Preceding Earnings Announcement

In a significant development that highlights the escalating AI competition, Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) is allegedly negotiating an investment in AI search and agent startup, Perplexity. This is part of an equity funding round that could potentially value the company at over $30 billion. This is a substantial increase of more than 50% from its previous valuation of approximately $20 billion just a year ago.

As initially reported by The Information, Nvidia is among the potential investors in a round that could be worth several billion dollars. This deal aligns with Nvidia’s broader strategy, which involves increasing investments in companies that are building their AI businesses on the chips it manufactures. Earlier this year, Perplexity announced its plans to utilize Nvidia’s new Vera CPUs for AI agent workloads, following their superior performance compared to traditional server processors.

Perplexity’s accelerated growth has sparked investor interest. Its annualized revenue has skyrocketed to over $750 million, a significant leap from less than $250 million at the beginning of 2026. This growth is partially attributed to Perplexity Computer, a cloud-based AI agent utilized by professionals to automate tasks. This news comes just a day before Nvidia is scheduled to announce its fiscal second-quarter earnings on August 26, with keen interest in the company’s AI investment strategy and balance sheet.
