In a landmark move in AI infrastructure, payments behemoth Stripe has sealed the deal to acquire OpenRouter, a renowned AI model gateway startup, for a staggering $7 billion. This news was reported by Bloomberg on August 16, 2026.

OpenRouter provides an AI gateway that enables developers and businesses to access over 400 AI models. These include models from industry leaders like OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, and DeepSeek. The gateway offers a unified interface that allows users to select the most suitable model for their specific task, based on their requirements and budget. The startup boasts about 8 million global users and had recently secured a $113 million Series B round in May 2026 at a valuation of $1.3 billion. This makes Stripe’s acquisition price a premium of over five times.

This acquisition represents Stripe’s most significant investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure to date.
