FAA Expands Approval for Swift Fuels’ 100R Unleaded Avgas to Over 1,200 Engine Models
In a significant development for the general aviation industry, the FAA has broadened the Approved Model List (AML) for Swift Fuels’ 100R unleaded aviation gasoline. The list now includes more than 1,200 piston engine models and 1,600 airframe models through an updated Supplemental Type Certificate (STC). This expansion, led by the FAA’s Central Certification Branch, means that 100R is now eligible for use in aircraft that collectively account for approximately 56% of all 100LL avgas sold across the United States.
Swift Fuels’ 100R is currently the only commercially available 100-octane unleaded avgas that operates under FAA-approved STCs and complies with ASTM International’s D8603 production specification. The newly approved engines span brands such as Lycoming, Continental, Franklin, Pratt & Whitney, and more. To use the fuel, pilots must register for a Swift Fuels STC. However, owners of the company’s previous UL94 STC automatically qualify via Swift’s “Forever STC” program at no additional cost.
Distribution is now actively expanding across locations in 29 U.S. states and internationally in countries including Canada, Australia, Germany, France, Austria, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands. This expansion is a crucial step towards the FAA’s goal of phasing out leaded 100LL aviation gasoline from most U.S. airports by the end of 2030.
