Innospec Provides Crucial Update on Future of Leaded Avgas
The general aviation community received a measure of reassurance this week when Innospec — the world’s sole remaining manufacturer of tetraethyl lead (TEL), the critical anti-knock additive in 100LL aviation gasoline — issued a significant public update on its production plans.
In an official information update released on August 10, 2026, Innospec confirmed that “no firm timelines on the cessation of TEL-B production have been made” and pledged to communicate any future decisions to GA stakeholders. The company also stated it “fully supports the EAGLE initiative and the industry goal to eliminate leaded aviation fuels in piston-engine aircraft safely by the end of 2030.”
The statement comes amid intense industry debate following the EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2026 show, where concerns grew that the 2030 unleaded transition deadline may slip — leaving thousands of piston-engine aircraft stranded without a certified fuel. The EAGLE (Eliminate Aviation Gasoline Lead Emissions) group has been racing to approve a viable replacement, but no single unleaded fuel has yet cleared all FAA certification hurdles for the full GA fleet.
Innospec’s acknowledgment that it “fully recognizes its responsibility to the GA industry as the last manufacturer of tetraethyl lead” provides at least short-term relief to pilots, aircraft owners, and FBOs dependent on 100LL.
