FAA Approves Swift Fuels’ 100R Unleaded Avgas for Over 1,600 Aircraft Models
The push to eliminate leaded aviation fuel from U.S. skies just took a giant leap forward. Swift Fuels, based in West Lafayette, Indiana, announced in July 2026 that the FAA has dramatically expanded the Approved Model List (AML) for its 100R unleaded avgas, adding more than 1,200 piston engine models and 1,600 airframe models to the original Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) first granted in September 2024.
The newly approved engines come from over 80 manufacturers, including approximately:
- 395 Lycoming models
- 195 Continental models
- 95 Curtiss-Wright models
- 95 Pratt & Whitney models
These Phase I approvals represent aircraft that collectively consume up to 56% of 100LL aviation gasoline used across the U.S., marking a pivotal step in the government’s goal to complete a full transition to unleaded aviation gasoline by 2030. The fuel complies with ASTM International specification D8603 and is the only commercially available 100-octane unleaded avgas approved via FAA STC.
Swift Fuels says Phase II and Phase III approvals — targeting higher-performance engines — are expected through 2027 and into early 2028. The company is also working with the FAA Technical Center to test 100R on seven high-performance Continental and Lycoming engines as part of its drive toward full fleetwide approval.
