FAA Approves Over 1,200 Engines for Swift Fuels’ 100R Unleaded Avgas
In a significant development for the general aviation industry’s move towards lead-free flight, Swift Fuels announced in mid-July 2026 that the FAA has substantially expanded the approved aircraft list for its 100R Unleaded Avgas. This update includes over 1,200 piston engine models and 1,600 airframe models to the fuel’s existing Supplemental Type Certificate (STC), initially approved in September 2024.
The newly approved aircraft represent approximately 56% of all 100LL avgas consumed across the United States, marking Phase I of Swift Fuels’ broader three-phase transition plan. Engine approvals span more than 80 original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), including:
- Lycoming (~395 models)
- Continental (~195 models)
- Pratt & Whitney
- Curtis Wright
These certifications comply with the ASTM International D8603 production specification.
Swift Fuels notes that 100R is currently the only commercially available 100-octane unleaded avgas operating under FAA-approved STCs. Pilots who previously purchased a UL94 STC from Swift will automatically receive the 100R STC at no cost through the company’s “Forever STC” program.
Phase II and III approvals — covering higher-performance turbocharged and large-bore radial engines — are expected through 2028, all supporting the U.S. government’s goal of transitioning entirely away from leaded avgas by the end of 2030.
