IonQ Seals $1.8B SkyWater Acquisition, Emerges as the Premier Fully Integrated Quantum Firm
In a landmark development for the quantum computing sector, IonQ (NYSE: IONQ) has officially concluded its $1.8 billion acquisition of SkyWater Technology as of today, July 31, 2026. This follows the final regulatory approval received on July 28. The deal, initially announced in January 2026, morphs IonQ into the world’s sole vertically integrated, full-stack quantum platform firm.
The acquisition grants IonQ direct command over its semiconductor supply chain via SkyWater’s US-based foundry. This makes it the only quantum hardware manufacturer in the world to design, construct, and dispatch its chips wholly on American soil. In contrast, every other major trapped-ion quantum competitor, including Quantinuum, currently depends on Infineon Technologies, a German manufacturer, for their specialized trap chips fabrication. IonQ’s access to SkyWater’s Pentagon-accredited foundry completely eliminates this foreign dependency.
SkyWater will persist in operating as a wholly owned subsidiary under its existing name. It will continue to serve its wide array of existing semiconductor customers while providing IonQ with dedicated fabrication lines. The amalgamated company is scheduled to conduct its Q2 2026 earnings call on August 5, 2026, followed by an investor day on September 8. Following Q1 results that exhibited a 755% year-over-year growth, IonQ had previously elevated its full-year 2026 revenue guidance to $260–$270 million.
