A Revolutionary Liquid Halts Children’s Cavities Without Drilling or Needles
A groundbreaking advancement in children’s dental health, a simple, cost-effective liquid known as silver diamine fluoride (SDF), is making waves. This revolutionary treatment has been proven to halt tooth decay in young children without the need for drilling, injections, or sedation.
The pivotal Phase III clinical trial, spearheaded by the University of Michigan, was published on July 29 in JAMA Pediatrics. The trial involved 830 children under the age of 6 from Michigan, New York, and Iowa. The researchers discovered that SDF halted decay in over half of the treated baby teeth. The treatment, applied with a tiny sponge-tipped applicator, takes mere seconds per tooth, although it does permanently darken the treated area.
Every year, untreated cavities result in thousands of American children visiting emergency departments, with many eventually requiring surgery under general anesthesia. SDF presents a pain-free and affordable alternative that could save families significant stress and expense. The authors are now advocating for the official FDA approval of SDF specifically for treating cavities in young children. This approval would move it beyond its current off-label status and could potentially lead to improved insurance coverage.
“For almost anyone, this can arrest the decay and stop the infection and the pain it causes,” said co-principal investigator Margherita Fontana of the University of Michigan. “This could benefit many people.”
