Europe’s ‘Coolcation’ Surge: Heatwaves Drive Travelers to Nordic Havens
Europe’s intense summer heatwaves are transforming travel trends. Millions of holidaymakers are trading the blistering Mediterranean beaches for the refreshing allure of cooler northern destinations. This burgeoning trend is now known as the “coolcation.”
As temperatures in southern Europe consistently soar towards 40°C (104°F), the demand for cooler getaways has skyrocketed in 2026. Trip.com data reveals that searches for coolcation destinations experienced a remarkable 74% year-over-year increase in the first half of 2026. Northern Europe and Alpine destinations are becoming increasingly popular as heatwaves alter summer travel preferences.
The statistics are compelling: On the French version of Hotels.com, searches for Copenhagen have surged by 246% since the first heatwave hit France in May. Similarly, searches for Dublin, Ireland have increased by 151%. Nordic capitals like Oslo and Helsinki have witnessed booking growth of 154% year-over-year and 124% respectively, according to industry experts.
Destinations like Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, Slovenia, and Wales are receiving heightened interest from travelers eager to escape the extreme heat. This trend extends beyond Europe. New York-based travel advisor agency, Fora Travel, reports a similar pattern among American clients, as the US also grapples with record-breaking summer temperatures.
Tourism analysts are currently debating whether this is a fleeting trend or a lasting shift in global travel habits spurred by climate change.
