AI Startup Recursive Secures $410M AWS Deal for Self-Improvement

In a remarkable AI infrastructure deal of 2026, Recursive Superintelligence — a startup just six months out of stealth mode — announced a $410 million multi-year compute agreement with Amazon Web Services (AWS) on July 28, 2026. This deal constitutes the majority of the company’s total $650 million fundraising to date.

The company was founded by Richard Socher, the former Chief Scientist at Salesforce, and is supported by investors such as GV (Google Ventures), NVIDIA Ventures, and AMD Ventures. Recursive is in the process of developing what it refers to as open-ended self-improving AI systems — AI that can independently evaluate its own performance and create improved versions of itself without human intervention. This method is referred to by the company as “Level 1” autonomous training, or Recursive Self-Improvement (RSI).

Instead of assembling large teams, Recursive is investing nearly all of its capital in raw computing power. CEO Socher mentioned that the announcement made today is “likely going to be one of the smallest compute deals we’re going to sign in the next few years.” AWS will collaborate to develop infrastructure specifically designed for Recursive’s needs. The company anticipates launching its first usable AI products by October 2026.

This deal highlights the ongoing competition in AI infrastructure, with companies like OpenAI and Anthropic already having signed multi-billion-dollar cloud contracts with Microsoft and Google respectively.
