A New Era in Australian Aviation: Qantas Inaugurates Operations at Western Sydney International Airport
Today marks a transformative moment in Australia’s aviation history as Qantas Freight commences the first commercial operations from the newly minted Western Sydney International Airport (WSI), also known as Nancy-Bird Walton Airport. The inaugural flight on the evening of July 27, 2026 signifies the dawn of a new era in Australian travel. WSI is the country’s first major greenfield international airport development in over 50 years.
The Qantas inaugural freighter service will ascend from WSI’s cutting-edge 24-hour Cargo Precinct. This dedicated 24,000-square-metre facility is designed to manage over 850 tonnes of freight per week. The new cargo hub is projected to augment Sydney’s total cargo capacity by approximately 33%, bolstering e-commerce and next-day delivery sectors.
For leisure travellers, the exciting news arrives in October. Jetstar is set to operate the airport’s first-ever commercial passenger flight — Flight JQ362 — on October 25, 2026. The flight will depart at 11:00 AM for the Gold Coast on an Airbus A320. Jetstar also plans to operate up to 14 weekly services to Melbourne and 3 weekly services to Brisbane. Full Qantas passenger services are slated to follow on March 28, 2027.
WSI CEO Simon Hickey emphasized the airport’s round-the-clock operational capability, a significant advantage over Sydney Kingsford Smith, which operates under stringent night-time restrictions.
