Wildfires in Europe: A Blow to Summer Tourism in France and Spain
A catastrophic wave of wildfires is currently sweeping through southern France and central Spain, causing significant disruption to the summer tourism industry. As of July 27, 2026, these devastating fires have resulted in the evacuation of over 300,000 people from their homes. The regions most affected include the Gironde region in southwestern France, and areas near Madrid and Ávila in Spain. These fires have led to the closure of campsites, imposed transport restrictions, and caused a mass cancellation of tourist activities across some of Europe’s most cherished summer destinations.
Emmanuel Macron, the French President, called for an emergency crisis cabinet meeting on Monday to organize a national response. Meanwhile, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez visited the fire-affected areas in Valencia. The wildfire in Gironde alone has scorched over 42,000 hectares (approximately 104,000 acres), coming perilously close to the wine city of Bordeaux. Spain’s interior ministry confirmed that nearly 10,000 hectares were ravaged in the Madrid region, with an additional 13,000–15,000 hectares burned in Ávila. This crisis has also impacted the final stage of the Tour de France, which had to be shortened as security personnel were reassigned by France’s Interior Ministry to combat the fires.
