Amazon’s Strategic AI Pivot: Job Cuts in AGI Division
Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) confirmed on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, that it has laid off an unspecified number of employees in its Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) organization — the division responsible for developing the company’s most advanced AI models. This marks another targeted round of workforce reductions as the tech giant aggressively refocuses its AI strategy.
The AGI unit, which includes teams working on AI foundation models (such as the Nova model family), silicon development, and quantum computing, is being restructured to sharpen Amazon’s focus on customer-facing AI initiatives. A company spokesperson stated the decision was made to “move faster on what counts” for customers.
The latest cuts follow a much larger round of layoffs announced earlier in 2026, when Amazon shed approximately 16,000 employees as part of a post-pandemic restructuring. In total, the company has now laid off more than 30,000 staffers since October. Despite the workforce reductions, Amazon has committed to a $200 billion investment in AI and cloud infrastructure, including a $1 billion initiative to embed AWS engineers with enterprise clients building agentic AI systems — signaling that the cuts are strategic rather than financial in nature.
