FAA Significantly Broadens Swift Fuels 100R Unleaded Avgas Approvals
In a significant move towards the eradication of leaded aviation fuel, the FAA has considerably broadened the Approved Model List (AML) for Swift Fuels’ 100R unleaded avgas. This expansion includes the addition of more than 1,200 piston engine models and 1,600 airframe models to its Supplemental Type Certificate (STC). This announcement was made on July 14, 2026, by Swift Fuels, based in West Lafayette, Indiana, marking Phase I of the company’s comprehensive unleaded avgas transition plan.
The newly approved aircraft account for approximately 56% of the current U.S. 100LL (leaded avgas) consumption, covering engines from over 80 OEMs. These include Lycoming (~395 models), Continental (~195 models), Curtis Wright, and Pratt & Whitney. Swift Fuels describes 100R as the only commercially available 100-octane unleaded avgas that is both FAA STC-approved and compliant with ASTM International’s D8603 production specification.
This expansion serves as a crucial milestone in the U.S. government’s initiative to transition to unleaded aviation gasoline by the end of 2030. Pilots who previously purchased Swift’s UL94 STC will automatically receive a 100R STC at no additional cost through the company’s “Forever STC” program.
- Additional approvals for higher-performance engines and airframes are anticipated in Phase II and Phase III deployments through 2028.
- Swift Fuels will also be showcasing at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, July 19–26, 2026.
