xAI’s Grok 4.5: A New Era of AI with 1.5 Trillion Parameters Begins Private Beta Testing at SpaceX & Tesla

Elon Musk’s AI venture, xAI, has launched its most advanced model yet, Grok 4.5, into private beta testing. This exclusive deployment within SpaceX and Tesla began on June 28, 2026. The announcement, made by Musk himself, signifies the first real-world application of the model before any public release.

Grok 4.5 is a product of xAI’s V9 foundation model. This model boasts a colossal 1.5 trillion parameters, approximately three times larger than the v8-small model currently driving Grok’s production traffic. A distinguishing feature of Grok 4.5 is the incorporation of Cursor coding data in supplementary training. This follows SpaceX’s $60 billion acquisition of Anysphere, Cursor’s parent company, in June 2026.

In his announcement, Musk stated that preliminary internal evaluations suggest Grok 4.5’s performance is “close to, perhaps exceeding” that of Anthropic’s Claude Opus. However, no independent third-party benchmarks have been published yet. The model’s deployment within the engineering-heavy environments of SpaceX and Tesla indicates a concentrated emphasis on technical reasoning and complex coding workflows.

Perhaps the most ambitious aspect of the announcement is xAI’s declared intention to release entirely new foundation models, trained from scratch, every month for the rest of 2026. This extraordinary development pace, if sustained, could fundamentally alter the competitive landscape at the AI frontier against rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic.

A public release date for Grok 4.5 has not been announced yet.
