Robert Sumwalt: A Safety Legend Honored with the 2026 Wright Brothers Memorial Trophy
The National Aeronautic Association (NAA) has bestowed the prestigious Wright Brothers Memorial Trophy for 2026 upon Robert Sumwalt, the former Chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). This trophy is amongst the highest honors in aviation.
Sumwalt’s recognition comes as a result of his over four decades of exemplary service in various roles such as an airline pilot, safety researcher, instructor, and federal leader. His relentless advocacy has brought about a permanent transformation in global transportation safety standards.
His illustrious career spans 24 years as a commercial airline pilot, during which he logged more than 14,000 flight hours. This was followed by his groundbreaking human factors research with NASA’s Aviation Safety Reporting System. In 2006, Sumwalt was appointed to the NTSB and served as its 14th Chairman under several presidential administrations until his retirement from federal service in 2021. He currently holds the position of Executive Director at the Boeing Center for Aviation and Aerospace Safety at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
“To be counted among the pioneers and leaders who have received the Wright Brothers Memorial Trophy is the honor of a lifetime,” Sumwalt said. “This recognition is a testament not to any single individual, but to the collective, enduring effort to make flight safer, more efficient, and more accessible.”
The trophy will be presented at the Aero Club of Washington’s Annual Wright Memorial Dinner on December 17, 2026, in Washington, D.C.
