Block Inc. Enters S&P 500, Setting a New Benchmark for Cryptocurrency

Block Inc., the financial technology company co-founded by Twitter founder Jack Dorsey, officially joined the S&P 500 index on July 23, 2025. This event marks a significant milestone for the fintech industry and the adoption of cryptocurrency in mainstream finance.

The inclusion of Block represents the first time a public company with a bitcoin strategy has been accepted into this prestigious index. Block will take the place of Hess Corporation, which was recently acquired by Chevron. The company currently holds 8,584 BTC and has actively integrated bitcoin into its services, positioning itself as a leader in cryptocurrency-focused financial services.

Block met all the stringent financial criteria for S&P 500 inclusion. This includes positive net income over the most recent four quarters, a market capitalization above $18 billion, and sufficient liquidity. The addition of Block to the S&P 500 is expected to attract more institutional investors and further solidify the company’s position in the fintech sector. It also signals a broader mainstream acceptance of cryptocurrency in the financial industry.
