OpenAI Confidentially Files for IPO, Anticipating a $852B Debut on Wall Street

The artificial intelligence arms race has officially moved to Wall Street. On June 8, 2026, OpenAI — the creator of ChatGPT — disclosed that it has confidentially filed paperwork with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. This makes it the third major AI developer to indicate a public listing in an IPO pipeline that is currently estimated to be worth $3.6 trillion.

Based on its most recent funding round in March 2026, OpenAI is currently valued at $852 billion. The company has partnered with Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley as underwriters. As of March, the company was generating $2 billion in monthly revenue. Analysts suggest that a potential public listing could occur as soon as September 2026. However, in a characteristically straightforward statement, the company said, “We expect it to leak so we’re just announcing it,” and noted that the timing has not yet been finalized.

The filing follows rival Anthropic’s confidential S-1 submission on June 1, valued at $965 billion. This comes just days before SpaceX’s record-setting Nasdaq debut. Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, has previously described going public as the “most likely path” for the company. He cited the company’s enormous capital requirements for AI infrastructure and computation. Sarah Friar, OpenAI’s CFO, noted that the company is already “acting with the good hygiene of a public company.”

This dual-filing frenzy marks a pivotal moment in tech history. Previously private AI giants are preparing to expose their financials to public scrutiny for the first time.
