Apple’s Groundbreaking Reveal: Gemini-Powered Siri & iOS 27 at WWDC 2026
In a historic moment for Apple, CEO Tim Cook delivered his final Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) keynote at Apple Park on June 8, 2026. The event is being hailed as one of the company’s most significant software milestones in recent years.
The spotlight was on the completely reimagined Siri, now supercharged by Google’s Gemini AI. This transformation is part of a multi-year licensing agreement estimated to be worth around $1 billion annually. The revamped Siri operates on a bespoke 1.2-trillion-parameter Gemini model, a sizeable leap from any AI model previously developed by Apple. Siri now boasts a standalone app with a chatbot-style interface, a system-wide “Search or Ask” gesture, and Dynamic Island integration for iPhone 16 and newer models. The assistant can now delve into personal context such as emails, photos, messages, and calendar data to execute complex tasks across apps.
Apple also pulled back the curtain on iOS 27, along with macOS 27, iPadOS 27, watchOS 27, tvOS 27, and visionOS 27. The new operating systems introduce a polished Liquid Glass UI, AI-powered photo editing tools, namely Extend, Enhance, and Reframe, and an Extensions system. This system allows users to select third-party AI models — including ChatGPT or Claude — as their default assistant. Developer betas are currently available, with a public beta slated for July and a full release targeted for September 2026. On September 1, Cook will pass the CEO baton to hardware chief John Ternus.
