Dropbox Announces Leadership Transition: Ashraf Alkarmi Steps Up as Co-CEO

Dropbox made a significant announcement on Tuesday, May 26, 2026. The company has promoted Ashraf Alkarmi to the position of co-CEO, where he will serve alongside founder Drew Houston. After a transition period, Alkarmi will assume the role of sole CEO, with Houston moving into the role of executive chairman.

Alkarmi joined the Dropbox team in late 2024, coming from Vimeo where he held the position of Chief Product Officer. His impressive resume also includes senior product leadership roles at industry giants such as Amazon and Meta Platforms. Since joining Dropbox, Alkarmi has served as General Manager of the company’s core products, which include:

  • File sharing
  • E-signature tool Sign
  • Document platform DocSend

Houston, who founded Dropbox nearly two decades ago at the young age of 24, had high praise for Alkarmi’s leadership. He stated, “Ashraf has done an incredible job transforming our core business, and I can’t think of a better leader for Dropbox’s next chapter.” Houston, now 43, was the first entrepreneur to take a company from Y Combinator all the way to the public market.

In addition to this leadership transition, Dropbox also announced that Michael Torres, a former executive at Alphabet and Amazon, will join the team as Chief Product Officer effective July 7, 2026. The company remains confident in its financial outlook, affirming that its second-quarter and full-year 2026 financial results are expected to meet or exceed prior guidance. This underscores the company’s confidence in its AI-focused product roadmap and strengthened core business.
