Unveiling Hidden Side Effects of Ozempic through AI Analysis of Reddit Posts

Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania have leveraged the power of artificial intelligence to scrutinize more than 400,000 Reddit posts. Their study has unearthed unexpected side effects of prevalent weight-loss drugs such as Ozempic and Mounjaro, which may not be fully represented in clinical trials.

The study, published in Nature Health on May 24, 2026, examined posts from nearly 70,000 Reddit users over a span of five years. The research not only confirmed the well-known gastrointestinal side effects like nausea and vomiting, but it also shed light on several overlooked symptoms that warrant further scientific scrutiny.

  • Nearly 4% of users reported menstrual irregularities, including intermenstrual bleeding, heavy bleeding, and irregular cycles—a rate that would be even higher in a female-only sample.
  • Other frequently discussed symptoms included temperature-related complaints like chills, hot flashes, and feeling cold.
  • Significant fatigue was also a common complaint, ranking as the second most common symptom despite its less prominent appearance in many clinical trials.

The researchers emphasize that while the study doesn’t conclusively prove these medications caused the reported symptoms, the findings indicate patterns that necessitate further investigation. This research underscores how AI and social media analysis can augment traditional clinical trials by capturing real-world patient experiences and concerns that may not always surface during medical visits.
