Urgent Warning Issued Over 38 Botulism Cases Linked to Unlicensed Botox Injections in England
The UK Health Security Agency has issued an urgent warning following the reporting of 38 cases of botulism poisoning. These cases, reported between June 4 and July 14, 2025, have been linked to unlicensed Botox-like injections.
The poisonings were first identified in north-east England, with additional cases reported in East England and East Midlands. Patients experienced severe symptoms including:
- Difficulty swallowing
- Slurred speech
- Breathing difficulties requiring respiratory support
Evidence suggests that an unlicensed Botox-like product was used in all cases. “Investigations are ongoing but evidence so far suggests the use of an unlicensed Botox-like product,” stated UKHSA officials.
The agency emphasized that only registered medical professionals should prescribe these treatments. The warning comes as the UK prepares for new regulations. These regulations, effective from June 2025, will require:
- Mandatory licensing for practitioners administering injectables
- A ban on remote prescribing of cosmetic injections
