Tecnam P2012 STOL: A New Era for Australian Aviation with Horizon Airways
Italian aircraft manufacturer Tecnam has marked a significant milestone with the delivery of Australia’s first P2012 STOL aircraft to Horizon Airways, a Queensland-based airline. Announced on May 19, 2026, this delivery ushers in a new era for regional air connectivity in some of Australia’s most remote areas.
Horizon Airways, operational since 1994, serves communities in central, western, and northern Queensland. The introduction of the P2012 STOL is set to replace the airline’s aging fleet of 1970s-era aircraft. This will enhance connectivity for communities in the Torres Strait and Cape areas. The aircraft is equipped with:
- Exceptional short-field performance
- Nine air-conditioned passenger seats
- The latest aviation safety technology
This combination ensures reliable service to remote island communities.
“This aircraft, the first of its kind in Australia, is designed specifically to meet the unique needs of our region,” said Ed Morrison, CEO of Horizon Airways. Operating from Horn Island, the P2012 STOL offers unprecedented performance on short runways. This provides safer and more reliable access to some of Australia’s most isolated locations.
