Anthropic Strikes a Significant Compute Deal with SpaceX’s Colossus Facility
Anthropic, a leading AI company, announced a landmark partnership with SpaceX on May 6, 2026. This deal grants Anthropic access to the entire computing capacity at the Colossus 1 data center, located in Memphis, Tennessee. The agreement provides Anthropic with an impressive 300+ megawatts of compute capacity and over 220,000 Nvidia GPUs, effectively addressing the infrastructure constraints that previously limited service availability for Claude AI users.
Anthropic’s partnership with SpaceX comes at a time of explosive growth for the AI company. CEO Dario Amodei revealed that the company experienced a growth rate of 80 times last year’s levels during the first quarter of 2026. This rapid expansion led to reliability issues and strict usage caps for Claude Pro and Claude Max subscribers. The new compute capacity secured through the deal with SpaceX is expected to help alleviate these issues.
Beyond the immediate infrastructure boost, Anthropic has expressed interest in working with SpaceX to develop multiple gigawatts of orbital AI compute capacity in space. This deal signifies an unexpected alliance, given SpaceX CEO Elon Musk’s previous criticisms of Anthropic. However, Musk has recently publicly praised Anthropic’s team, stating that no one at the company “set off my evil detector.”
