McDonald’s Nationwide Transition Away from Self-Serve Soda Fountains

McDonald’s, the fast-food giant, is marking the end of an era by phasing out self-serve soda fountains across the United States. This move is part of a broader modernization strategy that includes removing beverage stations from dining rooms. The company aims to complete this transition by 2032, with many locations already shifting drink services behind the counter.

“Our fans’ love for McDonald’s beverages runs deep,” McDonald’s stated to FOX Business. “Next month, we’re building on that passion with a new era of beverages, featuring a variety of Refreshers and crafted sodas rolling out nationwide.” This shift, initiated during the COVID-19 pandemic when hygiene concerns over shared public surfaces were heightened, aims to ensure consistency across all ordering channels, including drive-thru, mobile app, delivery, and in-store dining.

Moreover, this move addresses practical business concerns. Industry data reveals that a fountain soda, costing restaurants only a few cents per serving, sells for several dollars. This makes beverage control crucial for profitability. By moving drink preparation behind the counter, McDonald’s can reduce product loss from unpaid refills, while enhancing order accuracy and speed. The company assured that refills would still be available, but customers will need to request them from staff.

The transition is a reflection of changing consumer habits that increasingly favor takeout, delivery, and drive-thru service over dining in. McDonald’s has been investing heavily in modernization, with initiatives like self-ordering kiosks, expanded digital ordering, and testing six new drinks in select markets starting April 28, 2026. While competitors like Burger King and Wendy’s still offer soda fountains, industry analysts suggest they may follow McDonald’s lead, given the company’s trend-setting role in the industry.
