Google Pledges a Monumental $40 Billion Investment in AI Powerhouse Anthropic

Google has made a groundbreaking announcement on April 24, 2026, pledging an investment of up to $40 billion in Anthropic, the artificial intelligence startup responsible for the revolutionary Claude AI assistant. This represents one of the most substantial AI investments ever made by a leading tech company.

The deal encompasses an immediate investment of $10 billion, valuing Anthropic at a staggering $350 billion. An additional $30 billion is contingent upon Anthropic achieving specific performance targets. This investment deepens Google’s existing partnership with Anthropic, which was initiated back in 2023 when Google first invested $300 million for a 10% stake in the company.

This colossal capital injection comes hot on the heels of Amazon’s announcement of its intention to invest up to $25 billion in Anthropic. This brings the AI startup’s total funding commitments to an impressive $65 billion in recent weeks. As of March 2026, Anthropic’s annual revenue has skyrocketed past the $30 billion mark, a significant jump from about $9 billion at the end of 2025. This surge is largely attributed to the success of Claude Code, its AI assistant for software development.

The investment underscores the fierce competition in the AI infrastructure landscape, with tech behemoths vying to secure computing capacity and partnerships with leading AI labs. While Google’s Gemini is a direct competitor to Anthropic’s Claude in the AI model market, Google also plays a pivotal role as an essential infrastructure supplier, providing Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) and cloud services to Anthropic.
