FAA Initiates Major Upgrade with New NOTAM System Launch
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is transitioning to its new NOTAM Management Service today, April 18, 2026. This marks a significant modernization of the critical aviation safety alert system. The changeover is scheduled to take place between midnight and 4 a.m. EDT, replacing the legacy system that has been in operation since 1985.
The new NOTAM Management Service (NMS) is a cloud-based platform designed to provide improved reliability, speed, and resilience. This transition comes in response to the January 2023 system outage that grounded morning departures nationwide for approximately 90 minutes, prompting accelerated modernization efforts.
“We built a brand-new NOTAM service from the ground up in record time,” said FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford. “It is resilient, user-friendly, and scalable, and will significantly improve airspace safety and efficiency.”
According to the National Business Aviation Association, the transition should be completely transparent to operators, with no anticipated operational differences. NOTAMs will continue to appear in their current format initially, though the new infrastructure offers greater capability to ultimately present information in an easier-to-understand layout. The system handles more than 4 million NOTAMs annually.
