Sonex Aircraft Ceases Operations: An End of an Era in Experimental Aviation
Sonex Aircraft LLC, a stalwart in the realm of experimental aviation, has announced the immediate cessation of its operations, as revealed by owner Mark Schaible in a heartfelt video message on March 27, 2026. This closure signifies the end of a company that has been a beacon for affordable homebuilt aircraft since its inception in 1998.
Schaible attributed the closure to a “perfect storm” of adversities, including a drastic decline in sales, the bank’s refusal to roll over debts following several unprofitable years, escalating costs, competition from pre-owned Sonex aircraft in the secondary market, and cash flow issues. This decision was made in spite of years of relentless efforts to keep the Wisconsin-based company afloat.
Sonex had earned a solid reputation with over 2,100 aircraft projects worldwide and more than 700 operational airplanes. The company was renowned for its straightforward aluminum construction and the AeroVee engine, making homebuilt flight attainable for builders who were often priced out of more intricate aircraft. The closure was announced just as the company was gearing up to ship its eagerly awaited Highwing kit.
Both Schaible and company founder John Monnett have expressed their interest in finding potential buyers or investors who are willing to support the existing worldwide Sonex fleet. The closure has sent ripples of shock through the experimental aviation community, occurring amidst broader challenges confronting the kit aircraft industry.
