Capella Kyoto: A New Luxury Hotel Experience in Historic Geisha District

Capella Hotels and Resorts has proudly unveiled its first Japanese property, the 89-room Capella Kyoto. The grand opening took place on March 22, 2026, coinciding perfectly with the peak of Kyoto’s famed cherry blossom season. Nestled in the historic Miyagawa-cho geisha district, close to the Kenninji Temple and the Kamo River, this luxury hotel represents a significant enhancement to Japan’s premium hospitality sector.

The property, a creative brainchild of acclaimed architect Kengo Kuma & Associates and Singapore-based Brewin Design Office, reinterprets Kyoto’s traditional machiya townhouses. The design features layered spaces, narrow alleys, and concealed gardens, providing an immersive experience. The hotel, built on the former site of Shinmichi Elementary School, forms part of a tripartite cultural development. This includes the restored Miyagawa-cho Kaburenjo Theatre, which historically served as a private training ground for Kyoto’s geiko and maiko.

The hotel’s signature restaurant, SoNoMa by SingleThread, is a unique collaboration with the three-Michelin-starred SingleThread restaurant from Sonoma, California, under the expert guidance of Chef Keita Tominaga. The accommodation options vary from Deluxe City Rooms to the expansive 206-square-meter Capella Suite, with six rooms boasting private onsen baths. The exclusive “Capella Curates” cultural program offers guests privileged access to performances at the Kaburenjo Theatre and intimate meetings with maiko in private teahouses—experiences typically off-limits to the general public.
