Aviation Pilots Rally Against Starlink’s Significant Price Surge
General aviation pilots are taking a stand against SpaceX’s Starlink. This action follows the company’s restructuring of its satellite internet service, which has resulted in a significant price hike. The new pricing structure has seen monthly costs for in-flight connectivity skyrocket from a range of $50-$65 to a staggering $250 to $1,000.
Starlink has recently limited its standard Roam and Priority plans to a 100 mph ground speed. This move effectively pushes pilots towards new, aviation-specific tiers. The Aviation 300MPH plan, which offers only 20GB of data, is now priced at $250 per month. On the other hand, the Aviation 450MPH plan comes with a hefty price tag of $1,000 per month. This is a stark contrast to the past when pilots enjoyed more data at a fraction of the cost through standard roaming plans.
An online petition has been launched in response to this change. Thousands of pilots, who had previously invested in Starlink hardware based on its affordable pricing, have added their signatures. The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), a global representative of 400,000 pilots, has also voiced its concern. A letter was sent to SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, expressing fears that the price hike will force many general aviation pilots to discontinue service, despite their prior investment in hardware.
“A large number of general aviation operators across the globe have used Starlink as a safety-enhancing tool,” said Jim Coon, AOPA senior vice president of government affairs. Pilots depend on the service for real-time weather updates, flight planning, and emergency communications. This is especially true in remote areas where traditional connectivity options are limited.
