Walmart Accelerates Deployment of Digital Price Tags Across US Stores

Walmart recently announced its plan to expedite the rollout of digital shelf labels across all its 2,300 U.S. stores by the end of 2026. This move will replace traditional paper price tags with electronic displays that can be updated through a centralized system using a mobile app.

The technology, developed by Vusion Group, empowers store managers to update prices on more than 120,000 products instantly. This task previously took employees up to two days to complete manually. Walmart employees report that digital shelf labels have reduced pricing duties by up to 75%, freeing up time to assist customers. The labels also feature LED lights that help with restocking and guide delivery drivers to specific products.

While Walmart emphasizes that the technology enhances pricing accuracy and operational efficiency, the move has sparked concerns among some lawmakers and consumers about potential dynamic pricing or surge pricing capabilities. Senators Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) and Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) have introduced legislation to ban such practices. However, Walmart maintains that prices remain consistent for all customers regardless of demand, time of day, or individual shoppers, and stresses the company’s commitment to its “Everyday Low Price” strategy.

Another retail giant, Kroger, has also begun experimenting with similar digital price tag technology. This comes as retailers modernize their operations amid ongoing supply chain challenges and inflation concerns.
