FAA Initiates eVTOL Pilot Program in 26 States
The U.S. Department of Transportation and Federal Aviation Administration made a landmark announcement on March 9, 2026. They have chosen eight projects for the pioneering eVTOL Integration Pilot Program (eIPP), which spans 26 states. This marks a significant stride towards the commercialization of electric air taxis and advanced air mobility aircraft in America.
The program, detailed in President Trump’s Unleashing Drone Dominance Executive Order, is set to establish one of the largest real-world testing environments for next-generation aircraft globally. Operations are projected to commence by summer 2026. The projects involve leading manufacturers such as Archer, Joby, BETA Technologies, Wisk, Electra, among others. The selected projects cover a wide range of operational concepts:
- Urban air taxis
- Regional passenger transportation
- Cargo logistics
- Emergency medical response
- Autonomous flight technologies
Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy underscored that the initiative will “dramatically improve how people and products move” while solidifying America’s position as a global leader in transportation innovation. The program will equip the FAA to formulate new regulations for the safe deployment of these futuristic aircraft at scale. BETA Technologies, selected to participate in seven of the eight launch programs, holds the record for the most participation of any electric aircraft developer. They will operate in at least 10 states across the U.S.
